Sarkozy announces 360 billion euro plan for banking sector

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday announced guarantees on interbank loans of up to 320 billion euros to shore up the financial sector. Additionally, 40 billion euros would be set aside to recapitalise French banks, he said.

Pope Benedict XVI on politicised visit to France

On his maiden visit to France as pope, Benedict XVI hailed Nicolas Sarkozy's controversial idea of "positive secularism" as a "beautiful expression". The French president said that "it would be madness" not to have a dialogue with religion.

Shooting near US consulate in Istanbul

A gun battle outside the US consulate in Istanbul left six dead, including three policemen and as many attackers. Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk later cited police sources saying the gunmen were suspected members of al Qaeda.
